Back in my teen years I remember the moment when a close friend had been killed in a car accident. Time stood still for just that moment and the world went quiet. Two of my friends went to the snow for the weekend, only one came home. That day changed my life forever.
But sadly, that wasn’t to be the only time trauma would affect me. I myself was involved in a car accident back 1991, innocently driving home from work after doing overtime one evening and an elderly gentleman who hadn’t driven for a long time popping out to buy milk for his wife who wanted her cup of tea after dinner. Wrong place, wrong time and I ended up in hospital with a fractured sternum.
I can tell you whilst I was off the road for a couple of weeks while my car was repaired, traffic lights without arrows, became my fear. I avoided them all after that as I couldn’t bring myself to trust anyone. But, with the right support behind me, I slowly started to trust them again. It still haunts me today, but being extra cautious helps me navigate this path.
Since I started this role back in February 2014, I seemed to be drawn towards supporting people with anxiety, road trauma fears and intellectual disabilities and have so enjoyed this role. Whilst it hasn’t always been easy and sometimes not knowing what to say, that left me wanting to support my clients even more!
During Covid I completed a Diploma of Counselling, as well as a certificate to support clients who have suffered any form of trauma from a registered training organisation.
I now am able to offer counselling sessions to clients who have a fear of driving. Whether that be helping them get back in the car as the driver, or even being able to get back in the car at all!
Having lived with trauma from two different angles, I know the importance of everyone being able to regain the confidence they once had to feel comfortable once again.
Whilst I may not be a psychologist that is linked to the TAC, one thing I can tell you, I listen, I guide, I support. I have lived experience. Not following a guideline that has been taught and expected to be used.
Want support with a difference? Send me an email and let’s have a conversation around how I could support you. NDIS funding available as well if you qualify. Other types of support also available. Click www.thereinventionstrategist.com.au to find out how.
Until next time, take care.
